Unless you are ready to move or spend quite a bit on a renovation, most of us have to make the best use of the closets that we have in our homes. Here are a few tips to help make the best use out of your space:
Clear Out the Clutter - The first step to more space is to get rid of clothes that don't fit or other items you no longer use. If they are still in good shape, donate them. Some places will even pick up your donations. If they aren't in good shape--get rid of them. No one wants to wear your favorite slippers with holes on the bottom.
Upgrade Hangers and Rods - Using uniform hangers (and getting out empty ones) will make things hang better and make more space on the rods. Also, if you have room, add another rod for a 2 tier affect, and group shorter items this way, it will also free up some floor space in your closet.
Stack Taller - Most closets are as tall as the room they are in. Consider installing shelving above the rods and then stack seasonal items you don't need as often up higher. You may need a step stool to access the area, but, only a couple of times a year isn't inconvenient.
Create Storage for Small Items - Bins, boxes and drawers can be used to contain smaller items that you don't hang on hangers. Purses, belts, scarves, ties and more. Also, don't overlook hanging something on the back of the closet door as well.
Organization is Key - Above all, if your closet is organized, it will feel bigger and better in the long run. Keep your shoes in order, maybe hanging "like" items together. Anything that keeps it neat and tidy will be the best use of your limited space.
Give Your Closet Ambiance - Okay, so you don't really need ambiance, but a well lit closet (so you can see what you have and get what you need) and one that smells nice (it does hold shoes at times, remember) will make you appreciate the space as well.
While your closet may not be "closet of your dreams" maximizing the space that you have, can make a great functional space a reality!
