Antiques are always popular. Some look good when reupholstered, but then there are special antiques that you want to save the vintage fabrics on--such as a needlepoint seat or back cover. Here are a few tips to clean such precious items:
1. Vacuum First - Be careful and tilt the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner hand tool away a bit. This will remove dust and outward dirt.
2. Spot Clean - Use a gentle cleaner free of perfumes and dyes and test a small piece of the fabric first to make sure it doesn't remove any of the color from the fabric. Then, if it is safe, spot clean soiled areas by carefully following the cleaner's instructions.
3. Professionally Clean - If too much of the fabric is heavily soiled or a large portion of the item is covered and your spot cleaning isn't helping, look for a professional cleaner that specializes in vintage textiles and home furnishings.
Remember: Some of today's special furniture items may become some of tomorrow's antiques! Care wisely for your beautifully upholstered furniture so it can last for generations to come!
