Plan Your Space - When you are converting a closet into a good functioning supply station, you need to gather all the the things you want to store in there in one place. Then, divide those things into categories that you need. Make sure the things you will use the most will be waist or eye level in the space. Put things that are used once in a while up higher and things that are heavier or needed a bit more than the higher supplies, lower. *good lower idea is heavy duty file cardboard boxes so you can get rid of bulky filing cabinets. Files are used, but not all the time.
Select Your Shelves - Using an adjustable shelving system is a good idea for an office supply station. You can have half shelves for taller bins or boxes and you can adjust them as your needs change. If you go this route, you need to expect to pay $350 for a good system. In the long run, it will be money well spent.
Boxes, Baskets and Back of the Door - Straight sided, lidded boxes are good for storage. Use only a few different types, so that things look uniform in the space and can stack easily. Baskets that are uniform in shape and size are good for oddly shaped supplies, but will still sit squarely on a shelf. Also using the back of the closet door for additional small storage can be a good idea. You can use hanging shoe pouches in that area. Each pouch can hold smaller supplies so they can't get lost. Be sure to label EVERYTHING you can't see when you open the door. You may think you will remember where you stored your extra resume paper, but, marking the box or bin that it is in is a way to be sure you know!
Collect and Organize Your Containers - Now that you know what you can do with certain items, collect the like sized or shaped containers and work on placing them on the shelves to get the maximum storage usage out of the space. After you see how all your containers will fit, then you can place your items in the containers. This will help save a lot of trial and error with filled containers which sometimes can be heavy. That way you just will need to fill them after you know what bin, basket or box your item will go in.
There are a lot of different things you can use this type of storage area for. If you don't have a home office, it can be a craft supply area, or a wrapping paper station. Use your imagination and careful planning and it can be a useful space for years to come!
