You may NOT have a window that is big as the one that is in the picture, however, there are a few tricks that you can apply to make your space a bit bright and airy!
Ditch the Curtains - You want bright and airy? Get rid of the heavy, dark curtains! Use light blinds or shades when and where you need them. More light in is more dark gone!
Reflect the Light - One trick to not only make a small space feel larger, but also one that reflects the light is to add a mirror or two! Put one at the end of a dark room or hall, or one across from a window to give a room a double amount of light. They don't have to be huge mirrors, either. Sometimes a small, unassuming mirror will reflect just enough light to add some brightness to a room.
Outside and Peaceful - Bringing some outdoor color and texture will make a space feel more open an airy as well as adding some cool, muted hues of paint. Think peaceful nature.
Tight Spaces - Using a bold, light pattern in wallpaper in a stairwell or a tight hallway will brighten up a space. Also, using a muted hue of paint with something shiny or glitzy will bring contrast and excitement to a dull, boring area.
Fresh Furniture - Using light toned furniture and accessories will keep the space from feeling heavy and clunky. Open, light shelving and clean lines will physically make more room in a space as well.
Dark Low, Light High - If you must have some dark pieces in a room (or on wall) keep the dark low and the light higher up. You can do this literally like the bottom part of a wall painted a dark hue and the top part a light shade, or with an ombre effect, or simply use a dark accent color on one wall or so, while keeping a light ceiling. Darker pieces can ground a space, but, if you keep the light up--it will still help you to feel you are in an open space--with plenty of fresh air!
Happy decorating!
