Sometimes the best way to have a peaceful, summer oasis is to have it in your own backyard. Start planning now because Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner!
Think of what atmosphere you want to create - Being in your backyard can mean a lot of things to a lot of people...different things. What kind of vibe do you want when you go outside? Peaceful, relaxing? Party central? Family fun in the sun? Once you know what kind of space you want, it makes it easier to determine what you will need for that space.
Think Indoors for Style, Outdoors for Materials - Whether you are planning for seating around a pool or a place to feed people outside, if you think of the space you are using as an actual "room" it will be easier to imagine how to furnish the space. Comfy seating, functional tables and lighting will all play a part in your "outdoor room". You may want to set up several different outdoor "rooms". A dining room, and sitting room and a game room! You can have all of those features without real walls, or you can add different things (like fencing, a patio area or grassy area) to give more of a separation. However, it is outdoors so make sure you use materials that will hold up in the weather such as outdoor fabrics and treated furniture pieces so they won't rust or rot.
Use it All - Your "outdoor room" can be a good place to give old pieces a new beginning. An old side or coffee table, maybe an old bench can be re-purposed for outdoor living. For painted pieces use a laytex sealant or varnsih with a matte finish. Reapply the finish annually to keep it protected. So think twice before you throw an item away!
What is Permanent, What is Not? - Some fixtures you may add will stay in the weather year round with no ill effects and some things you may what to change every year. Using flowers in pots is a nice way to change things up seasonally with little effort. Plus, you can move the pots in different areas if you would like to. Even some treated things might need to be put up for the cooler months, so having independent pieces can be a good thing. It may be nice to have permanent things in a space, as well, such as patio or a roof over it. What about a fire pit for late night summer outings or for cozy fall evenings visiting with friends and drinking hot cocoa? It's all up to you and what says Sweet (Summer) Dreams to you!
