Catchy title, isn't it? But in life, sometimes it's harder to actually understand the cute analogy and apply it. I am going to do my best to be crystal clear on this....
When it comes to playing music, whether you are a musician who actually plays an instrument or someone like me who plays the radio and my music collection, finding the right song for the right moment can be tricky. There are so many things that goes into it, depending on which situation you are in, what mood you may have or what emotion you need to express.
In our lives, finding what we need for us to be successful and happy depends a lot of variables as well.
First, What Do You Love? - When you are getting ready to listen to or even play music, generally you want to play or listen to something you love, not something that you can't stand or even just tolerate. How many of us would NOT put up with a certain song on the radio before we changed the station? Along with that, there are days we like some songs more than others. It's the same with our lives and what we choose to do with them. It's so much harder to get a task done when we absolutely HATE it, isn't it? We get distracted, we procrastinate, we spend time complaining about how we don't like this or that. It's the same with choosing our vocation or purpose in life. If we pursue something we just hate, we aren't going be totally successful at it. I mean, you may earn good money, but, if you are not happy day in and day out, you will never really feel like you are successful in your life. Pursue what you love. If you don't know what you love, think of how you feel when you hear a new song and you really like it. You just LIKE it. We think there is this big mystery to finding what we love, but, honestly we know it when we feel it. It makes us happy. We think about whatever it is for fun--just like you sing your favorite lyrics to your favorite song.
Second, What Do You Need? - In pursuing what you love, it needs to be balanced with what you need in your life. You may have several favorite songs you love to listen to or play, but sometimes it depends on the day or even just your mood as to what you listen to. Also, you can't listen to 5 songs at once and really enjoy each one for what it is. It's the same with pursuing a passion. Passions change with our age, our experience and our general disposition. If you are depressed, it generally isn't the best time to pursue your passion, because your passion may be sleeping all day long or binge watching TV all day or eating an entire chocolate cake. All of these things aren't the best choices in that situation! Take a look at what your needs are in your life. Then apply what you love. Where do these things intersect? How can you pursue what you love in the best way for your life currently and for your future self? It may take a few tries before you find out for sure. Ever think you want to listen to something really loud and then after a few minutes you tire of it and want the opposite? We need to understand that our needs change, and be willing to adjust our passions and our lives to help meet our needs.
Third, Where Do You Find Both? - When it comes to listening or playing music, some days you just know what you want to hear or play. You just can't get a certain tune or style out of your head. Then there are days you turn the radio knob endlessly, or skip tracks you are listening to on Pandora or you can't seem to get a certain riff on your guitar right, hit the right key on the piano or get the timing right when trying to keep rhythm with a certain song. Some times it just doesn't click. BUT if you love music, do you just quit music forever? NO! You either keep trying until you find what is right, or maybe take a break for a day until you have more patience. It's the same when you are trying to find where what you love to do intersects with what you need to do in your life. At some point it will be clear. You can't give up just like you don't dump music forever when it's not clicking.
Last...What If You Want More? - If you want more happiness, if you want more passion, if you just want MORE in your life, then start to fill it with those things that move you! I heard someone say today that if you really are passionate about something, then you need to pursue it and put all the other STUFF that DOESN'T MATTER aside while you do! That DOES NOT mean to put those things that are important (like school, your current job to pay the bills, taking care of your family) in your life aside, it means if you still have time to play video games, watch TV, listen to music--then you need to put THAT time aside while you pursue your passion. So what if your DVR fills up with un-watched shows, your score at whatever game isn't as good as it used to be or if you are no longer up to date with what the number one song is on the music charts? If you are getting better at your passion, if you are making headway towards your dreams and if you feel that excitement about what is around the corner, then THAT is what IS important. You will get better at the things you MUST do, if you are happy and fulfilled with the things you LOVE to do.
So take your time. Find your favorite TUNE and PLAY IT with everything you have! There is nothing like when your very spirit sings out loud and happy!
Until Next Time!
