A long walk can always make you feel better. But in the winter? After last week, all of us might need some really great motivation to do that. Am I right?
Why Walk - Sometimes we need motivation to walk at all, let alone in the winter. However, walking in cooler temps causes your muscles to produce a chemical that actually helps burn the glucose and fat in your body, making you burn more calories! An added plus of walking helps relieve stress, which can help us out all year round. Walking is a good cardio boost, which can improve our general health as well. Besides, if you get used to walking in the winter, how much easier will it be to walk in the warmer months?
What to Wear - First, you need good solid shoes. You want something that will keep the moisture OUT and the warmth IN. The shoes need to have great grip so that if it is a bit wet or slick, you won't lose traction. They need to be comfortable as well because blisters know no weather limits! Next, layer your clothing. If it's really cold, tights or long underwear under comfy pants, a couple of shirts possibly (preferably one with long sleeves for sure) and a good coat that will keep the dampness out too. Fleece is good--it's lightweight, keeps you warm and dries quickly. Also, something to keep your head warm (you lose you body heat quicker from your head). Your hands will get cold fast, too, so comfy gloves as well. To keep really cold air from bothering your lungs, tie a scarf over your face. Believe it or not, you may sweat a lot even with it being cold outside. You need to be extremely careful that you keep your body temp up. All of this seems like a lot, but when you are out and about on a chilly day, you will see how enjoyable it actually is to be outside when you are all snuggly in your clothing.
Watch & Enjoy - Now that you are all ready for the outdoors, you need to enjoy it. If there is snow, enjoy the way it sparkles in the sunshine. Enjoy the sounds you hear your feet make as they walk in the crisp air. If it's a nice day, you still may hear a bird or two or see a squirrel running quickly across the road. Enjoy the natural world that is around you. Maybe you are inside all the time when you work, so take advantage of the great outdoors when you can. You body and spirit will be glad you did!
