You want to add color to your space, but a whole accent wall or painting all of your kitchen cabinets seems a little extreme. What is a good way to add color without going overboard? Here are a few suggestions:
Add Color: Through the Ceiling - Okay, so this is about as much paint as an accent wall, however, if all the other walls are neutral, having the ceiling be your pop of color can add some depth to the whole room without being too much. If you have furniture with a busy pattern or certain style you want to stand out, the ceiling won't take away from that. Just be sure the color you pick isn't a clashing hue.
Add Color: Through Upholstery - This one can be costly, depending on what you recover. However, if that is the main color in your room, it's a great way to make a statement without it taking over the whole room. For instance, you have mostly white and gray decor pieces and on the walls and trim, but decide to cover your dining room chairs a lovely pattern of bright colors, or one solid color. With all the white and gray grounding the space, the color will just bring the space to life and not take over.
Add Color: Through Removable Wallpaper - Doing a whole wall with wallpaper can be overwhelming (depending on the pattern and the color) like an accent wall can be. However, if you adhere removable wallpaper to dresser drawers, the back of shelves in a cupboard or some other accent piece, it can brighten up a dull piece without competing with the rest of the room. Using a retro pattern or highly floral pattern would look great in small doses.
Add Color: Through Artwork and Accents - If all of the above options are a little more than what you want to do, adding color through artwork, knick knacks, throw pillows or curtains can add the pop of color you want while keeping all your furniture, walls and ceiling more neutral. In fact, it's a great place to start to see what colors you like together, and what you don't. Then, you can venture out and try one of the other ideas when you have found your favorite color or combination of colors!
