During this Month of Love I have been writing about different ways to show love to ourselves and others. We have learned that showing love for someone or something is an action. So, how do we show love to a community? First we need to figure out what our community is, right?! In the smallest way it is our neighborhood, our town, our city or our region. In the largest way, it is our state, our country and the world. Community is how we are all drawn to each other--through like beliefs, customs or ideals. With social media these days, our community is global because we can connect with someone so far away. So now that we have established what community is, or can be, now we need to give it some love!
Love Through Kindness - Kindness is one of the greatest acts that we can do on a daily basis that can spread love to whomever we come in contact with. Through a smile, a gesture or word, kindness can make a huge impact on those around us. Sometimes one act can spur on so many others to act kind as well. Make it a choice to be kind every opportunity you get in your community. If someone is harsh with you, respond with kindness. Smile a lot. The more you do, the happier you are and the kinder you can be to others.
Love Through Support - We all need to support our community. Show it by going to local businesses. Use local restaurants and services. Show your support by giving financially to your church, school fundraisers and by attending local events. Even in a tiny town, there are local festivals and events throughout the year you can participate in. Sometimes, just showing up gives enough support to keep a group going a little longer. Show up when your community needs your voice to better it. Support others when they are being hurt, neglected or abused. Not everyone can support everything, but, you know what areas you can support, so do your part.
Love Through Volunteering - Another way to show our love to our community is through volunteering. Deciding to help others for no gain of our own is a great way to not only be blessed in our lives, but, give hands to others who need it. You can volunteer at your hospital, church, shelter and library. You can volunteer for a local politician you believe in or volunteer for a neighborhood watch. If you have a gift in writing, or singing or making things--or talking--find a place where you can give that gift away to help someone else. You will be giving love in abundance and receiving it even more.
Love Through Loyalty - One way we can show our love to our community, and I think this is so very important, is to be loyal. Saying the worst things about your community to others, sharing the worst parts with others and continually reminding yourself and those around you the faults of your community will do NOTHING to make it better or change it in any way. It will only cause you to be unhappy and ugly towards those around you and potentially hurt so many good things your community stands for. I believe we have the freedom and "right" to speak our minds, but just because we can doesn't mean we should. For as many times I can point out all the differences between myself and someone else, I can strive to find the things in common. The things that connect us. The places we are the same. The more we put our loyalty and love in those things, the less there will be towards the ugliness that separates us.
Of course, we can't make others be kind and supportive, or force others to volunteer and be loyal to us and our community, but we can all strive to be those things out of our choices. Each day we can decide to give that love everywhere we go. Make everywhere our feet (or our fingers on social media) takes us, OUR COMMUNITY. I think, if we all work towards that, the ugliness will lessen, or at least we won't see it as much because we are too busy loving our community to see it.
Until Next Time, All You Wonderful Readers!
