Last week we talked about personal growth in our lives. This week I want to talk about our BRAINS. What can we do to increase our intellect? There are several things we can to do to learn new things and to keep our minds growing.
Keep Your Mind Healthy - Eating a brain healthy diet, exercising regularly and making sure you get the rest you need will all help your brain (and your body) to be at it's best. Keeping our cholesterol where it needs to be, keeps our arteries flowing freely so our brain connections are good. Exercising increases oxygen in our blood and I learned last year that not sleeping well can actually lead to early dementia. So, if you want to increase your intellect, you need to make sure your human computer is operating at tip top shape!
Keep Your Mind Social - Strengthening our connections with others helps keep our mind strong. If you are older and aren't around children very much anymore, spending some time with your grandkids or nieces and nephews can actually increase your emotional well being which actually helps us live longer. When we spend time with others, we learn more about their lives, how they see things and it can give us perspective about several things in our lives. When we share our experiences, talk about issues that concern us and enjoy laughing with a friend, this all keeps the connections in our brains humming and learning new things as well.
Keep Your Mind Working - Whether you have a full time job or not, put your mind to work. If you are unable to get a job outside your home for one reason or another, begin a project you need to concentrate on for a while. Keeping our brains working on something, increases our intellectual muscles. Just like when you lift weights to increase muscle mass, working at your job or on a project keeps you flexing your mind and makes it stronger. Lean in to your strengths. The more you do, the more you will enjoy what you are doing. It will make the time fly as well as give you some long term happiness! So, work at something that drives you and be purposeful with your life.
Keep Your Mind Reading - Get a library card! Renew a magazine subscription or download an Ebook or two and commit to reading them this month. The more you read, the more you keep your mind busy and learning. If you struggle with reading too much, get some inspirational cards and read an affirmation a day, or learn a fact about something everyday or increase your vocabulary every day. Read SOMETHING often and you will increase your lovely head muscle!
Keep Your Mind Helping Others - When we volunteer with our whole heart it not only keeps our brain healthy, but helps lower hypertension as well. But don't do it halfheartedly, because that can actually be more detrimental to your health than not helping at all. It will increase your overall stress. Giving the best of ourselves to help others is an enormously satisfying feeling that can increase our joy and longevity as well.
Keep Your Mind Stress Free - Find some habits that will actually help you to relax and decrease the stress in your life. Get outside in nature. Turn off all your electronics for a bit and just rest. Pray for others. Whether you believe in the Bible or not, there is a scripture that lines out the best way to de-stress your brain: Whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there are any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Phil. 4:8) Basically THINK GOOD AND HAPPY THOUGHTS. Letting go of stress in our minds, makes room for all the new things we want to learn and remember.
Keep your mind active and you can't help but grow in your intellect. One thing though: increasing our intellect can be sort of addicting. There is nothing like the rush of learning something new and perfecting it in our lives. Once you truly experience it, nothing will compare. So get ready for something great and new in your life!
Until Next Time!
