When you are moving into a new home, excitement to decorate is at an all time high! No matter who you are, the thought of making a place "our own" is first on the list. However, I have moved enough times to know that how you feel the first month in a new space, is totally different than how you feel after 3 months! Here are a few suggestions to help you know how to decorate your new space!
Live in It - You can always "picture" what it will be like to live somewhere, but the most accurate picture you can have is if you DO live there and see how things function for you. I have been in my latest home for a year now and I have moved some things around already so they work better for me and already have different ideas about things outside I want to do as well as inside! So, before you begin a totally new re-decorating project, live in the home for a bit to see how it feels and what it is lacking.
Get Your Ideas - Before you are even settled in your new home, you probably already have some ideas of what you want. After you live there a bit, other ideas will come to mind. Make a Pinterest board, a Word document or maybe just save some magazine pages to keep your ideas in mind for what you really will want to decorate with. If you get color samples or textile samples, look at them together so you get a feel of what will look right (and what won't). If you have samples in your home, take them to the room you want to use them in to see how the lighting in that room will make the colors look, or how the textures will work with things you have in that room already.
Do Something Different - Make sure that while you are collecting and deciding what you want, you do something to make your space YOURS. Do something different than the norm. Add some edge to your space or use a piece of furniture or accessory in an unusual way. Having a "magazine quality" space might be okay for a while, but, for it to feel like your home, it needs to have your personality. Look for ways for you to add that to your space.
Get Quotes and Ask Questions - Some decorating things you may want to do may seem expensive. However, if you don't get a quote, ask any questions or do any research, you will never know for sure. When we were renovating our home, I found that some things I wanted were VERY affordable and others weren't at all, so I adapted what I wanted to what I COULD afford. I was glad when I checked around, priced things out and asked questions! I might not have some things in my home right now if I didn't ask. Research, quotes and questions are free. Always use those to your advantage.
Above all, it's okay to take the time to decide what you truly want. A little bit of patience and a lot of research can make your space a place you are happy with for a lot of years to come! --Jen Lush
