We all have had times that when spring arrives, we just want to run from work towards vacation time, or being indoors just seems like torture. We feel anticipation of what is to come! Spring feels hopeful and magical with nature going from dull to beautiful sometimes overnight! But when we realize that our lives are still the same, it can become discouraging and even depressing. So how do we get excited and enjoy spring fever without it causing us all sorts of problems?
1. Excitement is a Good Thing - There is nothing wrong with being excited and hopeful for something. Having a positive attitude in general is always helpful to our mental, physical and social health! However, learn to keep that positive attitude when you are home from your spring vacation or when you are yearning for the end of the school term or when you are settling in to something new in your life, like a new home or job. You may not have that super high adrenaline charge like you do when you are flying out of town, but, good things still happen AFTER spring! Learn to keep that excitement for the everyday wins in your life. Keep the honeymoon alive for the marriage!
2. Impatience is NOT a Virtue - When you are excited about something in your life, you may have a tendency to jump ahead to the next step too soon sometimes. Impatience can have the opposite affect of what we want to accomplish. If we jump the gun we can put ourselves in a precarious place! For example: If you ditch your current job when you are waiting for that second interview on a new job (because you just KNOW you are perfect for the job) something might not go as planned and then you are stuck with NO JOB. Or how about buying new furniture because the house you put an offer on is going to be just perfect for your family, only to find out that someone else had a higher bid, the inspection found numerous super expensive fixes or you didn't get the loan you thought for sure you would be good for, but, didn't find out before you had your heart set on that house. Along with our excitement, we need to carefully move ahead and be prepared for the big flashing WAIT sign to appear at all times!
3. Enjoy The Spring - Along with Spring Fever, we have a tendency to be looking to the next thing to keep our excitement going! After a great spring break vacation, do you have a tendency to start planning your summer vacation on the drive home? Stop! Enjoy the time that you have RIGHT NOW and be happy for the lulls between the exciting plans. Let yourself be rested for what is to come next. Take full advantage or what all Spring has to offer. Open your windows while you can (before air-conditioning season), breath in the fresh air after a nice spring rain and enjoy the spring flowers that only come once a year. Don't dread what is coming next at work or at home.
Spring Fever can sometimes keep us blinded to the right now in our lives. There is magic in the everyday as well, you just need to look for it.
Until Next Time!
