Spring has sprung! Before you know it, we will turn around and summer will be at our doorstep, too. It's always good to plan ahead, then, if something messes with your plans, you can easily adjust and make it work.
Plan & Prep Home Maintenance Goals - As I have said in several blogs before, decide what all you want done on your home or for your home during the summer months. Make a list, then, prioritize that list and get them on the calendar to get done! Plan what you will need to accomplish each goal, too. Save your money if you need to.
Plan Family Work Goals - After you have your maintenance goals, decide who in your family can help with some of the work. Let them know they will be helping and add their names to the calendar with the maintenance goals that need to be done. Pay attention to other schedules they may have such as summer school, work schedules or sports and other activity schedules. If you need the help, then be sure and consider their plans for the summer as well.
Plan Family Fun Goals - Of course, summer isn't just made for chores! It's also time for family fun, vacations and a time to rest and reflect (at least for a few days maybe!). If you have a busy life, you have to schedule in all the fun for summer too--at least the big events. Also, make some "not-so-scheduled" plans. Eat outside every so often "just because" or invite friends over at the spur of the moment. Make homemade popsicles for your kids and their friends and set up the sprinkler for a bit when your kids can't go to the pool. Give extra hugs. Stop to read a book. Take a walk. Enjoy the weather!
Plan End of Summer Clear Up - When the summer is winding down and back to school is on the horizon, plan when you will be putting up the grill, or cleaning up the toys left outside all summer. Finish up what is left of your garden and pull out dead dried up plants that were scorched by the summer sun. Put on the calendar when you will shut down your pool, end your big outdoor projects and schedule your furnace check for the fall. Now is the time to install gutter covers before the leaves start to fall as well.
Plans are just good reminders of what you want to accomplish. They aren't written in stone, but, they are meant to be a guideline to keep your home in shape and to be sure you enjoy your family and the summer weather. Things come up in life that alter our plans all the time. When that happens, just work with what you have and adjust. Some of the best times I have had with my family were unplanned events or times when we had to just "hang out" together because other things were cancelled or changed. Above all, just PLAN to ENJOY your summer, whatever may come your way!
