During this time of social distancing, we can't easily go out and shop. A lot of our favorite shops are closed, however, when we are all able to get out and about again, we will want to get the best deals we can with as little cash as possible! Second hand shopping is a great way to save your money and get some great quality items! Here are a few tips to get your best deals:
Take Your Time - At thrift stores there can be a lot of a variety of things. Start by picking one section per visit so you can take your time going through items. Second hand shopping is a marathon not a sprint.
Recognize What is Quality - Look for natural fabrics, not man made ones, these are generally of a better quality. With furniture items look for real wood and good construction. When you are purchasing glass or breakable items look for chips or cracks as well. Of course, always do research on a particular item you may be hunting for to find out what is the best quality you can get.
Inspect It - Many second hand stores have a no return policy, so be sure you check every item over really well for holes, or other damaged places. Some things can be easily fixed, but others not so much. Know what you are buying.
Only Buy if You Are Sure It's Needed - In a second hand store it's easy to get caught up in nostalgia. Don't buy items for this alone. Make sure you need the item somewhere before you purchase it. You don't want to collect a lot of "stuff" only to have to go through it at a later date and have to part with the item. It's not only a hit to your wallet, but, to your heart too. If you go in with this in your head, it's easier to enjoy seeing that nostalgic item and then leave it in the shop!
I know we will all have a bigger appreciation for our freedom in the months to come. Let's spend it wisely, frugally and with an open heart to those who need our patronage!
