No matter what age you are, it's always a good idea to cultivate healthy habits into your life. Here are a few to help you keep your heart healthy for as long as you can!
Keep Moving & Stretching - Stretch those legs (and everything else!). A study found that if people stretched their legs five times a week for twelve weeks, they had better blood flow through their arteries. So, a flexible you means more flexible arteries which means less chances for blockages.
Cut It Out - Less saturated fat, less sugar and much less salt all can lead to a healthier heart. Not to mention it may help maintain a healthy weight for you which is also good for your heart. Our heart is a muscle. It does need to work out to keep healthy, HOWEVER, making it work too hard can damage you heart, such as high blood pressure from too much salt or working too hard to pump your blood through narrow passages of arteries filling up with plaque because of too much fat in your diet. Work on developing habits of reading labels to see what hidden fats, sugars and salts may be in the food you eat each day and try to find better choices. Once you are in the habit of eating less fat, sugar and salt, the less you will need it in your food to make it taste good to you.
Add It In - Add in healthier foods wherever you can. For instance eating 45 grams of cabbage or broccoli (or other cruciferous veggies like them) daily can help you have healthier blood vessels than those who eat less than that. Also, adding more Omega 3 fats (salmon, tuna, olive oil) or even adding an Omega 3 supplement may also help lower your heart disease risk even more.
Keep On Connecting - One good habit to help keep our blood pressure down is to connect with those we care about. FaceTime is a good way to see the smiling faces of those you love or just give a friend a call, you'd be surprised on how much better you feel after a few moments of chatting with someone you love.
I hope some of these are habits you can easily add into your every day life to keep your heart healthy and going for a long time!
