Even though it seems carpeting has gone out of fashion, it's still one of the most widely used floor coverings on the market today. While it may not be installed in every room in a home, there is still a case to be made about having nice carpeting. If you are one of those people who like a little carpeting somewhere (like a bedroom maybe?) here are a few tips to make sure you not only choose the right carpet, but some tips to keep it looking good for years to come.
Assess Your Needs - Knowing how a particular room will be used is important to know so you be sure to have the right product under foot. For instance, using plush, beautiful carpeting in a mud room isn't the best idea. So think of your family (do you have kids? pets? does anyone have allergies?) and keep that in mind while you are looking for your carpeting or any flooring product for that matter. Your specific needs need to be matched with the right product.
Do Your Research - There are carpets out there that advertise to help against odor, dust and even allergens. Finding the best carpeting that will stand the test of time and help with the issues I just stated, may be the best plan for your space. However, any floor will have some dust and if you have pet messes that you don't clean up right away, even a wood floor can absorb odors.
Maintenance is a Must - Which brings me to my next point. Maintaining your flooring, especially carpeting, according to the manufacturer's instructions is the best way to help your flooring to last as long as possible. Clean your carpet only as often as the instructions say with the products they suggest to use. If you clean too much or use the wrong chemicals, this can damage your carpet and make it not only look bad by changing it's color or texture, but, actually make it easier to damage so that it needs to be replaced sooner. Just vacuuming can help maintain some carpeting for a long period of time without over cleaning.
Look to Professionals - Above all look for professional help when it comes to carpeting, not only for installation, but to see what carpet they suggest for your space. They will also usually have the best advice on how to care for a particular carpet and should know about how long that carpet should last with the space you have in mind. People will install what you want, where you want it, but, if you ask them their suggestions, they may steer you away from making a big mistake. It's always good to get some professional help and advice.
Carpet may have some drawbacks, but, when it's used in the proper way and maintained well, it can add warmth and be lovely in a home.
