Ordering furniture online is a "thing" now. You can order anything from a bed in a box, or a dining room table to a couch right from a website! It's amazing that you can have something so large delivered to your home without the need to go to store after store to find the right piece of furniture. However, sometimes when that item arrives, it may not be exactly what you had hoped for. In fact, you may have spent quite a bit on that piece of furniture and having it returned is probably out of the question. Here are some Furniture Fails that happened to designers and what they did to solve their problems!
Rearrange It - Even if you measure the space in the room where your new couch will go and actually love the couch itself, you may forget to consider how a close by door swings, or the angle of your TV and if you can see it well enough from that couch! So before giving up and selling it in a yard sale or giving it to a family member, try rearranging the room a bit and see if you can make that couch work. Sometimes, what we end up with is even better than what we thought we wanted in the first place.
Deal With It - There are certain pieces that may just not be the best choice at all, but, you loved the piece itself and you spent a lot on it so, maybe just live with it. Once you have had it for a while, getting rid of it in one way or another doesn't feel so hard the longer you have had it. In fact, you might find the right person with the right space you can give it to and feel great about it! Other times, after you live with something a bit, you may get used to it in the space so that it doesn't bother you when you walk in that room. Who knows? Maybe you'll move to a home that can accommodate that huge bed! Then you will be so glad you have it!
Modify It - So, you have the perfect piece of furniture and it will work perfectly in the room you want it in, but, getting it through the doorway or up the stairs is next to impossible. Sometimes, just removing the feet of the couch, or maybe carefully removing the trim from a doorway, or even removing a door, can be the all the fix you need to get that piece in the space! Take time to see if you can figure out a way to modify the surroundings or the furniture so it can go where you want it to go!
Switch It - If the rug you bought is too small for the room you bought it for, maybe you can switch it with a rug in another room. Of, if that sofa is the perfect color for your family room, but, isn't comfortable enough to lounge on like you planned, maybe move it to the kid's bonus room for them to use. Maybe that chair wasn't the color you expected and it's going to clash in the room you wanted that chair in, so try it in another room. Sometimes just having it trade spaces works. Try it.
It goes without saying that you should measure everything you can (don't forget the back of the couch, or how low the seat is) and if you can see a piece in person, try to do so. However, if online ordering is what you want, also try reading some of the reviews. Sometimes those will let you know if something turns up the wrong color for other buyers or is difficult to assemble or even doesn't hold up well enough to spend the money on in the first place! When we bought our dining room table sight unseen, the reviews even had pictures that other buyers had taken in their own homes so you see how it really worked for them (or didn't). Our dining room table is wonderful! The color, size and way it is made are all perfect. What we didn't take into account was how hard it was going to be for my husband and I to get it into our home and put it all together ourselves. We did it and it turned out great--but it was harder than I ever dreamed of! So, let's hope we don't move out of this house.....or we may have to have a yard sale because I don't know if we can easily get it out again!--Jen Lush
