We tend to think of clutter as stuff around the house that is out in the open and in the way, but the hardest clutter to deal with is the kind you can easily hide away. They say "out of sight is out of mind" and this is true. But having all your available storage used for things you don't even need anymore can create unnecessary stress in our lives. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to see if you need to keep some of that stuff you are hanging on to.
Do I REALLY Like It? - Look at the item(s) in question and ask yourself "Do I really like this?" better yet "How MUCH do I like it?". If you really aren't sure, then GET RID OF IT. Why keep something around if you don't even know if you like it? We get out of relationships when we know we don't like someone, so why stay married to that shirt?!
Have I Used It? - You have heard the rule: If you haven't used an item in a year, get rid of it. Well sometimes a year may feel too short. Like if you bought something on clearance at the end of summer and can't use it until next summer, maybe wait and see until after the next summer. But if it is something you could have been using even just quarterly and you haven't, then get rid of it. Décor items can be interchangeable through the year, so keeping some of those things stored for another season or two is fine, but if you still have some silk flowers that are faded and ugly and you keep putting them back every season instead of using them, it's time to pitch them.
Why Do I Need It? - You are in the garage holding a garden tool. You ask yourself "why do I need this rake?" well if you rake leaves every year then keeping that rake is important. However if you don't even have trees on your property and you have a rake, well then maybe you don't need it at all. Having 10 blankets may seem reasonable. You may use some if you have 10 people staying over. But, if you never have even 5 people who may be staying over (let alone when it's cold enough to need extra blankets) then maybe it's time to get rid of some. Sometimes it can be a sentimental thing and you don't really need it, you just want it. IF having that thing brings you happy memories every time you see it, well then maybe you need to keep it out somewhere! If it is something you have stored in the bottom of a box in the garage and never see it, then do you really need it?
What if I was Moving? - Sometimes getting rid of clutter can be easier if you think about moving. IF you were getting ready to move, would keeping this item be worth packing and moving to another place or would you get rid of it? Thinking this way may help you get rid of more clutter than you thought you could, so give it a try. Who knows? MAYBE you will get rid of enough clutter that you will be ready to put your house on the market? If you do, I know some buyers who could sure use a new house!--Jen Lush
