August is almost over, but before it is do these four things! You will thank yourself this Winter!
Plant Trees NOW - The best time for planting trees in Zones 4-8 is late summer/early fall (which is most of the United States). This gives time for the roots to get well established before winter and ready for next spring. Of course, since it can still be really hot in some of those months (depending on where you live) make sure you don't let it dry out too much either. Water often.
Get an Energy Audit - Your local electric/gas company will come by (free of charge) to audit your home's energy usage and areas that can have some things done to make it more energy efficient. They will check for leaks around windows or doors, using a better thermostat or other things that may help you save money and energy before winter hits!
Schedule Your Furnace Service - Now is the time to get your furnace service scheduled. This will help make sure that your furnace will be ready to go when it's time to start it up!
Get a Snow Plow on Speed Dial - If you live in a heavy snow area, check with a snow plow contractor and find out what kind of schedule you can get on so you can get out of your driveway when you need to. The area I live in doesn't usually have a lot of snow, but it's always good to who to call when a snow storm hits to clear out your driveway or your road depending on where you live. Also, we have local people who will deliver ice melt so we can use it on our walkways and patio. If you don't know who to call, figure it out now so that you can get on their list and they may even call you to check if you might need some help with those services when the time comes.
If you want a smoother winter at least 3 of these things will help that happen. Trees can provide shade, a wind deterrent and are good for energy saving as well, so if you want to have some nice ones at your home, now is the time to get starting planting for the future, too!
